Four nuns find themselves at the crossroads between long held ideals & today's feminist values.
Vivian Tiamet, Principal & Superior at St. Anthony School & Convent in Sleeder, Illinois, promises to help unwed, pregnant Jennifer. Then their school closes unexpectedly & the urgency of time presses. The girl wants an abortion! To make matters worse, the others, miffed by the closing, challenge Vivian's leadership.
Associate Reviewer Kate Holmes writes:
At the Crossroads is a startling look at what could possibly be happening today inside the walls of one of the last bastions of organized religion--the Roman Catholic Church. Here we meet four women, all nuns, all dedicated to their vocation. But for the first time in memory, the sisters find themselves pitted against the patriarchal church, particularly Father Rupert, the parish priest.
When Vivian turns to the elderly & traditional Sister Dominic for support, she is shocked to see how quickly her health has deteriorated & how frail the old woman has become. At the same time, Mary Ruth & Kimberly, the two youngest sisters are shining examples of women finding their way in a world where traditional roles become more & more irrelevant. Mary Ruth's unorthodox relationship with an adult piano student, & Kimberly's deep need to make some personal difference in the world with her life, put their vows at risk.
These courageous women dare oppose the status quo of their lives, to find truths--truths which have been denied them by centuries of man-made rules.
At the Crossroads is a real eye opener, somewhat surprising to a reader for whom the events that cause such divisiveness for these woman, are only a matter of course. I suggest that Catholic or Protestant, most women will find At the Crossroads an uplifting reading experience.

She is a Canadian wife, mother, grandmother, & avid reader. She has hungered for knowledge her whole life which has led her to haunt her local library & used book stores, looking for “old friends.” She has several bookshelves over which presides a print of Amergin, an ancient wizard from Celtic myth.
A welcome addition to her study, Della, her computer (named for its maker), has become a large part of her world. For some time Kate Holmes reviewed for another ezine, & as a means of giving herself a more varied reading experience, has joined RebeccasReads as a Associate Reviewer.
