The Quiet Invasion
Sarah Zettel
(Reviewer - - D. H. BROWN)
2000 Warner Books
ISBN: 0446609412
Venus is an uninhabitable sphere of lethal heat, deadly pressures & poisonous winds yet humans decide to explore it hoping to find the impossible. To the alien beings called the People, fleeing their own distant, dying homeworld, Venus offers possibilities beyond belief.
When explorers meet refugees on that strange terrain dire decisions are made from old attitudes & prejudices & the planet humans named after the goddess of love is about to become ground zero for an all out interstellar war.
Senior Staff Reviewer D. H. BROWN writes:
For a new science fiction writer Sarah Zettel brings to light a full & beautiful new concept of alien life.
Her emphasis on the parallels between possible cultures & the misunderstandings that can arise when those cultures clash are written with stunning clarity.
Throughout Our Story one point that has always struck me is that when two cultures meet & exchange names, their names invariably mean The People or The Real People. Which only emphasizes the ego-centric nature of culture itself.
And as has been true in the meanderings of our own species whether fleeing other cultures or natural disasters, a niche is found & exploited.
I fully recommend her work & would encourage any reader of science fiction to search her out & experience the worlds that she creates. They are wonderful!
I will never hesitate to pick up any book written by Sarah Zettel in future & I have already started the search for her first novel Reclamation & her second Fool's War.
