Dread Empire's Fall: The Praxis
Walter Jon Williams
(Reviewer - D. H. BROWN)
2003 HarperTorch
ISBN: 038082020X
The Shaa have subjugated the universe for millennia & now its power is fading.
Young Terran Gareth Martinez, a naval officer, is the first to recognize an insidious plot of a powerful, warlike insectoid society that was longest enslaved by the Shaa. They have learnt well from their masters & are now planning to rule the vastness themselves.
Together with pilot Caroline Sula, who has her own dark secrets, Martinez is the last hope for freedom against a merciless foe.
Senior Staff Reviewer D. H. BROWN writes:
As anyone who has ever read one of my reviews in the Science Fiction genre knows, I am a sucker for the head candy of the Space Opera. I don't know why, maybe it harks back to my early years of Heinlein, but I like the vastness of thought, the enormous parameters of a created universe in the far future dealing with things all too human with enough science & technology thrown in to make me believe, at least to the end of the book, that I've been there & done that!
That is what Walter Jon Williams has accomplished in his first book in the new saga of Dread Empire's Fall: The Praxis.
Did I find it to be great literature? No! Did I find it to be great SciFi writing? No. Did I find it engrossing? Imaginative? Yes! In fact it kept me tethered like a pitbull on a leash, truly very good space opera writing.
I await eagerly for the next installment of Dread Empire's Fall: The Sundering.
