Jerome and the Seraph
Robina Williams
(Reviewer - Colleen Helme)
2004 Twilight Times Books
ISBN: 1931201544
With his pet cat Brother Jerome explores the afterworld.
Leo, Brother Jerome's pet from the friary, turns up to say hello -- literally. Jerome is shocked, for he hadn't known that the cat could talk. Nor had he known his pet's real name was Quantuum -- “You can call me Quant,” so says the cat.
Is Quant dead or alive? He still lives in the friary, yet he pops along, as if through an interdimensional catflap, to see his friend in the afterworld. What is Quant? Jerome hasn't a clue.
& what is this strange world he's now in? Is it a new world or an old world? The Hound of Heaven is here, the Christian friars are here, but so are the centaurs & the Greek gods. & everyone seems to get along together just fine.
Associate Reviewer Colleen Helme writes:
When Brother Jerome realizes he has died, he finds the afterlife not at all what he expected. There are no cherubs, harps, or fluffy white clouds. In fact, the place is downright boring. All that changes when Leo, his cat from earth, pads toward him & begins a conversation. He lets Jerome know that his name is Quantuum, or Quant for short, & he is not dead like Jerome, but can exist in both worlds.
After this revelation, Jerome begins a series of experiments to test the boundaries of his new world. The more he opens his mind to see what is really there, the more he discovers. Quant returns often to rescue him, & guide him as he strikes out on new paths. Some of the things he uncovers defy his beliefs. He cannot imagine that what he is seeing can be true. Quant helps him understand that everything; mythical creatures & all, are tied together, thus giving credence to many different historical ideas. Jerome realizes that all things co-exist together under the Lord.
Jerome and the Seraph is a quixotic tale craftily told through the daily life of the catholic friars. As they strive to work out their problems on both sides of life & death, the cat is a central guide & help. It is interesting to discover how this comes about, & readers will enjoy this oft-times humorous, & enlightening book.
Jerome and the Seraph is the first book in the Quantum Cat series
