The Apocalypse Troll
David Weber
1999 A Baen Book Original Riverdale NY USA
ISBN: 0671577824
USN vs UFOs with a sense of humor. The bugs are different & bigger.
This one comes recommended by my husband. He gobbled it up one weekend and I was intrigued by his delight. I can vouch for its humor, scope and action. After he would read certain potent portions out loud, guffaw or rock in his chair the harder as its climax approached, I knew I was going to have to read The Apocalypse Troll.
I'd not read a David Weber before. In SF circles he is a master raconteur with an impressive corpus to his credit and I can see why. He does not disappoint. I was tickled when I realized I was reading what could have been C.S. Forester's descendant out in space. So honed is this author's craft in catapulting even this novice into the command center of a space ship, making palpable battleship engagements and meeting inexorable machinery.
Mr. Weber's inter-genderal space fleet juxtaposes nicely with our all-male terrain military as does the future mind with the not-so-future humans. My husband had quite a ferocious glint in his eyes, so I know Mr. Weber's ingredients have been blended together to make a worthy and potent piece of work. I enjoyed the adventure, the new ideas, vistas and possibilities and I'm not going to give away a thing! You have to read this one for yourself.
This is a cheeky, topical and knowledgeable read with a rollicking rhythm and a resounding and satisfying finale. It is so effective, rousing and thoroughly entertaining a read, I swear I could hear, in the background, a John Williams overture or a Sousa march.
