  Echoes Of Honor
   David Weber

   (Reviewer - D. H. BROWN)
1998 Baen Pub. Ent. Riverdale NY USA
   ISBN:ISBN: 0671878921

For eight bloody years, the Star Kingdom of Manticore & its allies have taken the war to the vastly more powerful People's Republic of Haven, & Commodore Honor Harrington has been in the vanguard. Now Honor has fallen captive to the enemy.

David Weber's Honor series has to be in the absolute fore-front of the hard science fiction/space opera genre & a powerful warning about surrendering one's rights to a system.

In the preceding three months I have read & in some cases, reread each book. I have not felt, for a long time, so captivated & so compelled by an epic.

This future universe that Mr. Weber has created has within it all of the best & worst that human kind has to offer. For me the characters live & die with a reality bordering on the non-fiction.

His central character, Honor Harrington, though fictional is someone that I, as a Viet Nam vet, wish I could have served with. For as a military person she certainly has honor. Something sorely lacking in most of the superiors I knew.

Honor is truly one of the few people, real or imagined, that I have ever met that I really knew. By her word & deed she compels all who work with & depend on her, to strive to be their very best.

David Weber's handling of the science part of this fiction comes across smooth & effortless. Very believable with no apparent shortcuts or flaws.

I would recommend this series to any youth, as an example of the best they could strive for in their own lives. Or any adult for that matter.

This series & especially, Echoes of Honor moved me to think of my own word & deed. This may seem a lofty ideal to have found in a simple science fiction series yet is nonetheless real.

To my mind, the Honor Harrington series will join together on my shelves along with the equally unforgettable Asimov Foundation series & Heinlein's Stranger In A Strange Land. They are truly indelible.
