Ashes of Victory
David Weber
(Reviewer - D. H. BROWN)
2000 Baen/Simon & Schuster, NY USA
ISBN: 0671578545
When the People's Republic of Haven made the mistake of announcing it had executed Honor Harrington, it also made the error of assuming their prison planet Hell could contain this intrepid Admiral, however, Honor along with a host of prisoners, escapes. Honor's return from the dead comes at a critical time for the Allies' morale as the war enters a make-or-break phase. For both enemies, however, there are dangers lurking that will destroy them all.
As I made no bones about it when I reviewed David Weber's Echoes of Honor, this author's writing moves me!
Ashes of Victory opens with Honor Harrington's home-coming & brought tears to my eyes. I really can't explain why this one particular science fiction series has grabbed me so thoroughly. Maybe I'm getting older, maybe I'm starting to suffer the angst of the loss of my yesteryears but I like the way David Weber's characters live their lives.
I like his clear distinctions between Good & Evil, Light & Dark:- both sides of the Stream of Life.
I feel somewhat betrayed by this medium in which I have to conform when reviewing this book & by extension, this series, because I can't get right in your face, yelling: “read it, read it - it's great, it's great!”
Duty - that's what it's all about & having said that & having read this installment, I must once again sit & read lesser books while I wait for David Weber to recharge & write the next adventure!
What is my recommendation for this book? A MUST READ & without a doubt a many times over re-read Old Friend. I encourage the reading of the entire Honor Harrington series from On Basilisk Station to Ashes of Honor I know you'll be hooked as I am.
David Weber has a fine opus of science fiction to his credit among which are his Honor Harrington novels: On Basilisk Station; The Honor of the Queen; The Short Victorious War; Field of Dishonor; Flag in Exile; In Enemy Hands & Echoes of Honor plus Mutineer's Moon; The Armageddon Inheritance; Path of the Fury; Oath of Swords & The Apocalypse Troll & more.
