The Law of War
William Shatner
(Associate Reviewer-D. H. BROWN)
1998 Ace/Putnam NY USA
ISBN: 0399143602
Hawkes wanted to retire to his Montana ranch, instead he finds himself Prime Minister of the mining community on Mars. He also finds himself surrounded by lying politicians & miners inexperienced with freedom.
The Law of War represents William Shatner's coming-of-age as an author of science fiction. His grand story of inter-planetary politics which he started with Man O' War has grown into a homily about ourselves & our species.
Carefully woven into this epic is the fact that we humans, once we have something in our grasp, do not like to let it go without a fight.
William Shatner's dark vision of our possible path into incorporated nations & a life of service to business, is shudderingly real. His understanding that we like to keep our eyes closed, pretending we're in the dark, until the boogey-man actually touches our shoulders, is all too vivid.
I liked this story because I could actually understand where it came from & where my attention was being drawn. His characters are authentic & VERY human!
Yes, William Shatner, you have made me - a Viet Nam Vet - agree that there are, sometimes, things worth dying for.
The Law of War is dedicated to William Shatner's bride, Nerine, & their new life together. As I was reading this book, the devastating news appeared on CNN of Nerine's drowning. Re-reading Mr. Shatner's dedication has given me insights into his life & personality.
More from William Shatner: Teklar; Teklords; Tekwar; Tek Vengeance; Tek Power; Tek Secret; Tek Money; Tek Kill; Tek Net; Man O' War.
