Death comes to Mort with an offer he can't refuse--especially since being dead isn't compulsory.

Associate Student Reviewer Karrie G. writes:

I am a great fan of Terry Pratchett books & love them all. But so far, possibly my very favorite is Mort, one of the books in the The Discworld series, a world in the form of a disc, resting on the back of four enormous elephants, who stand on a giant turtle, the Great A'Tuin. “The chances of something so patently absurd actually existing was a million to one, according to scientists inhabiting the Discworld. However, magicians have calculated that million-to-one chances crop up nine times out of ten.”

Mort, the title character, is a clumsy young man who is of no great use to his family. While father Lezek does say, “We're quite fond of him, his mother and me. You get used to people,” he also claims: “He couldn't find his arse with both hands.” So Lezek decides to take his son to town, where he could possibly become someone's apprentice in a trade, & be that someone else's problem.

But Mort stays waiting for a master till the stroke of midnight. Just as he has given up hope & feels quite itchy in his new outfit, “that gave plenty of room (for him) to grow, on the assumption that he would grow into a nineteen legged elephant,” he hears the trot of a horse. Except that “trot” does not do justice to the thunder of hooves on the brick road. A massive white horse carries a mysterious hooded figure. Imagine how amazed Mort is when the hooded figure introduces himself as Death, &, to make matters even more amazing, Death is there on quite unusual business. He is seeking an apprentice.

& so Mort is taken on a wild & hilarious adventure where he learns that messing with fate rarely goes well, & that falling in love with those who will eventually die is just plain stupid. Or so he thinks until...

The Netherlands is one of the smallest countries in Europe. Most people call the Netherlands Holland & it is about the size of Connecticut, but with a lot more people, sixteen million. You may think of tulips, chocolate, windmills & wooden shoes when you think of Holland. Although there are still lots of tulips & chocolate, & there are still some windmills, you wouldn't see many people wearing clogs today.
Books make great gifts: no calories, carbs or cholesterol!
