Cerulean Blue
Wray Miller
(Reviewer - Rebecca Brown)
2003 MillerWrite, Inc.
ISBN: 0972394818
A global biotech company sets in motion a pogrom to save the world using a newly discovered species of seaweed with regenerative properties.
While I do recommend this sprawling (500+ pages in large font in a large paperback) because it is an engaging & well thought out adventure: take a deep breath when you start reading. It is not so much poorly written, as unpolished. & as you all know, my editor's hat is always perched beside my reading cap. With my eagle eyes, red pens & editorial impassivity, I could have whittled away much of the awkward grammar, idiosyncratic fonts & flabby words.
However, & this is a huge however, I thoroughly enjoyed Cerulean Blue for its novel ideas about how to save the world from its worst enemy: us; its rip-snortin' action, & all the energetic characters: villains & heroes alike.
I have no idea if the science propounded holds any water, & it really doesn't matter to me. It's more about the ideas Wray Miller weaves into Cerulean Blue: the Big Thoughts about a new world order after a global biotech company has gained control of the politically gullible, yearning for a better, longer life; where nations make unlikely unions; where the manipulation & murder of the masses for the greater good has come about; where the rivalry between intelligence & commonsense, evil & good are played out in invisible boardrooms & hibernation repositories; where the survival of ingenious individuals living on the fringes are the only hope.
Grand apocalyptic fiction. If you think the scenario of Cerulean Blue a bit far fetched, remember what happened in the first half of the 20th century: the similarities to Adolph Hitler's plans for his Master Race & Final Solution are everywhere, & we couldn't believe them until they were breathing down our necks!
A compelling debut read!
