Sr. Staff Reviewer D. H. BROWN writes:
Within pages of starting Portals in a Northern Sky, the reader will know this book did not fall off the usual science fiction truck. The weavings created by Charles Douglas Hayes bridge some very deep cross-genre chasms. It is a mixture of “adventure, science fiction, historical, philosophy & literature” wrapt up & served in no particular order.
I will say that by the time I finished it, I began to fully understand what a wonderful wholecloth effort Portals in a Northern Sky is. Since I spent much of my youth & some of my maturity in Alaska, from missionaries' son to police officer to dog musher to big game guide, I found the place/time interesting right from the start.
& I enjoyed the philosophy of the author, & the characters he had written about. I know this book will not fit into the mold expected of some science fiction readers, but I found it to be a thoroughly pleasant read & can recommend it highly.
If you're jaded & looking for something different, then Portals in a Northern Sky will be like a bowl of sherbet. Even though I'm only giving it three teapots, I want Readers & the author to know it's going on my forever shelf, where I can pull it down to re-read, from time-to-time.
