On Earth, Satanist Quinn Dexter possesses a new army of the damned. At the same time spaceship master, Joshua Calvert, seeks a miracle in a haystack--the truth behind a 15,000 year-old legend that the alien Tyrathca intercepted a single message from unexplored space beyond Orion.
Could a God be sleeping somewhere between the stars?
Sr. Staff Reviewer D. H. BROWN writes:
This review is not so much one of a single book, but of the complete series called the Night's Dawn Trilogy. Rarely, in my more than 45 years of reading science fiction have I been treated to such a sweeping panorama as in the space opera mural painted by Peter F. Hamilton, which is the accumulation of 61/2 years of work, in such detail that by the time you finish it, you're dreaming of the universe he displays.
Other than Isaac Asimov's Foundation series, & the books of that universe written by others who followed (Greg Bear, et al), never have I been swept along so thoroughly into a science fiction reality.
I have always detested being fed trilogies or series, piecemeal, two years apart & waiting with baited breath. It was my good fortune to have all the Night's Dawn Trilogy books placed before me like a six course meal.
Over the space of two weeks, I found myself eating (reading!) until I was stuffed, digesting & then starting to read again. Food analogies are the only way I have to fully describe the feast these produced.
After finishing the last one The Naked God Part 2: Faith, I found myself still picking at the scraps, sated & because it was so good, unable to stop.
I had previously reviewed Peter F. Hamilton's Fallen Dragon which was my introduction & appetizer to this author's work. Then by happenstance into my lap fell The Confederation Handbook: The Essential Companion Guide to the Night's Dawn Trilogy. Talk about hors d'oeuvres! My appetite was truly whetted when the Night's Dawn Trilogy was finally served.
It is my recommendation that anyone with a true love of the hard science fiction genre make the effort to acquire all 6 books of the Night's Dawn Trilogy as well as The Confederation Handbook, pull up a chair to their favorite eating (reading!) table, grab their metaphorical napkin & tuck in!
I assure you the experience will be one you will not re-experience in your lifetime. Of course, I felt this way after reading Asimov's efforts, but that was 30 years ago, & since I'm 55, I'm not certain that within the rest of my lifetime, such an experience will ever come again.
So 4 teapots, my highest rating! & it'll be interesting to see what will come Peter F. Hamilton's mind in the future. For this effort will surely go down in the annals of science fiction genre as a masterpiece.
