Uprooted from her Southern home during the Civil War, Rosa Coleman settled in Philadelphia. In time she marries & when her husband's compassion turns to cruelty, she flees with her son to the Western frontier, & all the way north to the Alaskan gold fields.
Even though she has been toughened by her trek through wilderness & climates, it in no way prepares her for what reveals itself at the top of the world. There she discovers she has a role to play in bringing peace to Earth.
Sr. Staff Reviewer D. H. BROWN writes:
Joe Haldeman, the brother of Jack C. Haldeman, is proof-positive that it never hurts to have good genes. His writing has an incredible knack for giving the reader the unexpected.
After reading the flyleaf I was a bit shaken to find Guardian started in the Civil War (1861-1865) & knowing Joe Haldeman's writing & his previous works I was enticed to take it down.
The sheer quality with which Joe Haldeman writes gently engaged my thought processes & led me through a most improbable tale to a quiet & poignant ending that could not have been imagined when I started reading.
Guardian was thoroughly enchanting, while not strictly hard sci-fi, the touch of fantasy with which it is imbued was just the spice to bring out its flavor.
Giving Guardian a read will set you on a path of thinking that won't soon let you go. Haldeman's stories are pure poetry.
