  Blind Waves

   (Sr. Staff Reviewer - D. H. BROWN)
  2000 TOR Books
    ISBN: 0312864450

In a world where everyone has been displaced by the Deluge - a 100 foot rise in the sea level from melting ice caps, Patricia Beenan, an underwater salvage expert, stumbles upon a sunken freighter clearly fired upon by an INS ship, then she discovers dozens of bodies chained up in its hold.

This book came to me as I was looking through the shelves at our local rural library. I probably would have passed it up as both the author & the title were unfamiliar. But since I can hardly pass anything in our library that has the little space station sticker on its spine denoting science fiction, I pulled it out, opened it up & read the jacket.

Near future, global warming, rising waters, displaced hundreds of millions of people around the earth - huh, okay. So I checked it out & brought it home. There it sat on my shelf for nearly two weeks. Tell you the truth I was about to drop it into our library bag without reading it, if I hadn't found myself 20 miles from town & no other books around.

With my work done by ten o'clock one night, I wasn't ready to hit the sack yet, so I picked up Blind Waves & began reading.

I should have known as soon as I saw it was a TOR book that I wouldn't be disappointed & I wasn't.

It was fast paced, the characters marched through my mind doing their things & I was thoroughly involved.

Will this go down in the annals of SF writing as a kind of an Asimov classic? Absolutely not! Will I remember it? Oh yes! Did I like the world in which it was set? Oh no! Could it happen? Oh, yes!

Blind Waves was an absorbing read & gave a frightful view into what might happen should that much-prophesied Deluge happen.

At the same time it had what every SF book I read must have - hope. That it has in abundance! People will adapt & thrive as we've been doing for two and a half million years.

Is this a book I would buy? If it was on the newsstand I probably would. Am I glad I read it? Absolutely!
