It was the ultimate Y2K Glitch -- in 1632 Northern Germany things were bad -- with generations of religious wars there was no food & a lot of diseases. In 2000 things are going great in Grantville, West Virginia. The mines are working, it's deer season & everybody attending the wedding are having a good time until the earth shakes & the dust settles.
As everyone knows who reads my reviews, I'm not a big fan of alternate history, but Eric Flint has once again managed to grab my attention & rivet it within the pages of 1632.
I liked the story. I liked the characters & I liked the leaps of imagination that his writing invokes. As I took a look into the past of this little known era I learned more about the Thirty Years War than I thought was possible in reading a “science fiction” book.
This is about alternate time & development when the future imposes changes that wouldn't ordinarily have happened. We learn that our ancestors of 400 years ago were just like us & the only thing lacking in their imagination was the ability to see the possible.
Well, in 1632, Eric Flint brings the 20th century crashing into the middle of a conflict &, as in all conflicts, innovation is what has always moved technology forward.
Eric Flint first grabbed my attention when he co-authored the Belisarius series with David Drake, one of which I have reviewed -- Fortune's Stroke
I will have to now say that if he does it again, he will grab my attention, set me down & make me face the past with tears & laughter & a whole mess of information.
I found it to be funny, moving & quite exciting. A very good, readable story!
