 Edited by Peter Crowther
 (Sr. Staff Reviewer - D. H. BROWN)

 2001 Warner Books

Book Cover

Four novellas from the most important voices in modern science fiction -- from nanotech microcosms to infinite space.

Senior Staff Reviewer D. H. BROWN writes:

Futures is four novellas that are everything that is great about science fiction. These four authors are absolutely among the greatest voices in the genre today.

In Watching Trees Grow Peter Hamilton takes history, turns it upside down, shakes it a bit & gives us an alternate view of a history quite unlike anything I have ever read before. It is well known that the Roman Empire had a credo wherein the death of a Roman citizen was never forgotten. the extremes in this little book within a book to which the author takes you splits your mind open & lets in all kinds of new life.

Stephen Baxter's Reality Dust makes the reader look at reality in a whole new way. If you're a science fictio fan & like the movie Groundhog Day, you'll see all kinds of things in this story.

In Making History Paul McAuley shows how history is not always written by the victor & how history works its magic also on the observer & the writer of history.

The last of these little books is Ian MacDonald's Tendeéo's Story took me back to the Chaga in Evolution's Shore which always impressed me as being one of the most possibly real First Contact stories ever written.

To paraphrase Arthur C. Clarke: the Universe is not only strange but stranger than we can imagine. The very trait of our species' survival, adaptability, brings hope & after all that's what science fiction is really about -- hope & exploring ways that we can adapt.

Doing something very rare, I'm giving Futures 4 teapots because it is going on my shelf to be reread in the future.
