 Saturn
 Ben Bova
 (Sr. Reviewer - D. H. BROWN)

 2003 Tor Books
 ISBN: 0312872186

About the ringed planet, & the humans who will explore her.

Earth is groaning under the rule of fundamentalist political regimes. Crisis after crisis have given authorities the upper hand, & only in space do freedom & opportunity still exist.

Sent in an ark, a horde of incorrigible dissidents set out on a one-way expedition into space, where humans will still be humans, no matter their ideology or their intentions, & exactly what is the real purpose of the odyssey that's been so carefully guarded?

Sr. Staff Reviewer D. H. BROWN writes:

The list of superlatives one can use to describe a story by Ben Bova is long & probably would make a decent size volume in & of themselves.

I just like his writing. I always have -- he gives you part adventure, part mystery, part thriller & always good hard science fiction, in a future that is most often very probable.

In Saturn, he continues what can only be called a saga going back through Jupiter to Moonwar which can be considered nothing less than a grand tour of the solar system. You get glimpses of past characters & their lives & how their efforts have affected the efforts of those who came after them.

I remember the first time I saw the Rings of Saturn. I was 13, & the Junior High I was then attending had an 8 inch refractor telescope to which I kept my eye glued as often as I was allowed.

& those rings! So full of mystery & enchantment that that young boy wanted nothing more than to stand on the surface of Titan & gaze upon them forever.

So if you like a good yarn, hard sci-fi & characters who sound like the people next door, get a copy of Saturn, sit down & launch yourself into the “might be.”
