A RebeccasReads author in Authors & Books
A compassionate guide to bereavement. Stories & poems relating to recently deceased loved ones, whether people or pets, joyfully teaching us how to overcome our fears about death & dying.
What a remarkable little book is Spirit-Walking! Poems from the newly departed; visions from their memories; humor & anger & always, it seems, excitement at the Grand New Adventure.
When our Poppa was dying, I often would hear his voice letting me know what the chipmunks were doing; who he was meeting although I didn't know any of them & then on the day he drew his last breath, he insisted I read from his beloved Bible. So I took it out of the bag I had made for him so that when he went to church his hands would be free to hold his walking sticks. Drew out that well-worn book & it fell open to the Psalms & that is where I read from, holding one of his gnarled beautiful hands & saying those poems I'd so long ago known.
Carolyn Stearns' Spirit-Walking is a tender, exciting & healing little volume. Utterly unpretentious, utterly refreshing & utterly authentic. Poems from the Other Side of the Veil, in plain song, clear & bright, full of joy, excitement & eagerness.
Contemplative, comforting & crisply simple ill-used dogs & ill-filled bodies whose spirits are free now to dance with contentment, these messages come to this willing adept & through her fearless listening, we are gifted with the Spirit Songs of those who have gone before.
Whether by their own hands or by another's; whether by disease or resentment - the voices speak & we can now listen because Carolyn Stearns has put them to paper in a book which I am so very glad I've gotten to read, to feel & to absorb into my experience of life.
I shall always remember Spirit-Walking; I shall always look now at life with a sense of future, a sense of the death of this bag of bones as simply being the sloughing off of a layer of skin as the Spirit lives on to laugh & dance again.
Carolyn Stearns teaches her body work program Stretch and Meditation & is a massage therapist in psychic body readings & grief massage - out of which came her six Blessing Tree Self-Empowerment audio tapes. She has written novels, play & the Nog Stories. Her works have appeared in Fodderwing, Reality Change & Pilgrimage.
