Associate Reviewer Rev. Marie D. Jones writes:
In these times of stress, fear and uncertainty, what a wonderful gift Calvin Miller's Loving God Up Close is for those seeking a deeper relationship
with the Holy Spirit, & thus, with God. Miller, the author of Miracles
and Wonders: How God Changes His Natural Laws to Benefit You, & a pastor & theologian, offers a treasure trove of wisdom & insight into the abundant blessings of learning how to reconnect with the Holy Spirit that moves through our lives, & how that connection further brings us closer to God's will for us.
The book is geared towards a Christian audience, but does not preach or evangelize. Rather, the author writes with honesty & warmth about the power of the Holy Spirit to change lives throughout history, quoting the
Bible extensively, & utilizing personal experiences & anecdotes that illuminate the text even further. For budding Christians, a connection with the Holy Spirit is often elusive & difficult to achieve, even so for those
who have been Christians for years! Calvin Miller knows just how to gently guide the spiritual seeker along the path, with wisdom & love as milestones by which the reader can measure their own progress.
The author skillfully uses chapter titles such as The Wind & The Fire to symbolize the transformative energy of the Holy Spirit & how it moves in our lives, & I really enjoyed the chapter about personal triumph.
The third part of Loving God Up Close encourages us to come to know The Pleasure Of The Spirit & takes on a joyous tone, rather than the gloom-&-doom righteousness so many Christian authors adopt in trying to evangelize their readers.
What makes this book so special is the light touch it takes in enlightening & educating the reader about the Holy Spirit in the Bible & in our personal lives. I do not like reading Christian books that make me feel as
though I will burn in hell if I don't do things just so, or connect with God on someone else's timeline, & I welcome this more refreshing approach to encouraging personal spiritual connection.
Mind you, non-Christians may be put off by the Biblical quotes & clearly Bible-based teachings, but there is certainly much wisdom to be gleaned by anyone of any belief system who is blessed enough to pick up Loving God Up Close.
