Front Porch Tales
Philip Gulley
1997 Questar Pub, Inc. Multnomah Books, Sisters Ore USA
ISBN: 1576731235
In these warm-hearted stories of family, faith, laughter & love, a Quaker pastor offers us the kind of soul-nourishing snacks that revive our sense of humor, our love of the absurd & our need for healing of our harried hearts.
A wonderful collection of rib-tickling, funny-bone tapping, soul-chuckling memories-cum-comedies, including: When the Tree Went Crashing; The Paper Route; My Grandma, the Saint; My Grandpa, the Enigma; My Friend Jim and Why I Don't Like Him; My Cup Runneth Over, and So Does My Toilet; Family Life and Other Reasons Jesus Never Married; The Kitchen Table & Hardware Heaven.
Philip Gulley writes in a nostalgic & dead-pan way, delivering his punchlines so gently that you're chuckling away while your soul gets a soothing touch of spiritual connection.
I loved the way he brings up characters from The Bible & mixes them into a story, reminiscent of Aesop's Fables except all through this little book you know Philip Gulley is involved.
You get delightful glimpses of his perspective of being a child, a son, a friend, a husband, a father & a pastor in the Society of Friends. His humor is wry, dry & a tad naughty!
I'd quote segments of the stories that had me chortling with glee & familiarity, except you've got to read them yourself! Front Porch Tales will make a great stocking stuffer for the upcoming season of giving.
A pure & simply delightful read.
