The Rest of Us
Jacquelyn Mitchard
1997 Viking Penguin NY USA
ISBN: 0670876623
Dispatches from the Mother Ship is about the miracles & mysteries of life on earth written with a canny eye for detail & an exuberant wisdom. This is a book of her best under the headline of her internationally syndicated column.
I have never read Jacquelyn Mitchard's columns in the newspapers, what I did read was her brilliant first novel The Deep End of the Ocean. Then I opened this book at the library, read Better Scared Than Scarred & I couldn't put it down. I barely had the patience to allow Adele to handle it while she scanned it so I could take it home.
Jacqelyn Mitchard is a kindred spirit, someone with an ineffably wry, dry, poignant sense of humor. Who sees an outrage & decides to humor it; who has life catch at her throat & writes like her life depended on it, which it does. This author writes like I think: about life from the kitchen sink, the baseball bleachers, the driver's side. With wonder for the ordinary which makes life so very extraordinary.
Jacquelyn Mitchard is a philosopher with a vast maternal eye. Healing, soulful, charming & deeply generous. I relished: One Giant Step for Womankind; In a Heartbeat, New Life; Death Takes a Holiday and Just the Truth, Kids, Not the Facts. I do encourage you to get a copy of The Rest of Us & when you're feeling low, read a couple of articles, drink a cup of your favorite tea & call me in the morning!
