Certain Prey
John Sandford
1999 G. P. Putnam's Sons NY USA
ISBN: 039914496X
When Clara Rinker, an invisible hit woman who quietly goes about her business, collects her money & goes home, is hired by a Minneapolis defense attorney to eliminate a rival, the hit goes well except for one witness. Enter Lucas Davenport & his team with the FBI poking around.
What a study in murderous mayhem. Clara Rinker is an interesting person who does horrible things & to surmount a tough youth she made herself into one of the best in the business.
The well-known defense attorney, on the other hand, is a wicked work of art, making Clara seem, in contrast, rather humane & principled. This defense attorney is one out-of-control lady bent on success at any cost. With Davenport on their trail the cost skyrockets.
It goes from bad to worse as the hit woman & the defense attorney try to cover their tracks, get rid of witnesses & still come up smelling like a pair of posies. Meanwhile Davenport, the Minneapolis police department & the FBI are breathing down their necks.
After I've read a John Sandford I have to grab a kinder, cleaner true life epic of something like kayaking around the South Pole to get the coppery taste of blood out of my system. As with all of John Sandford's Prey thrillers, Certain Prey is as mesmerizing as the eyes of a cobra & just as deadly.
Now, you wonder, why do I read John Sandford? He writes damn good books. They're grippers with plenty of plot, twists & turns, fully fleshed characters & a hunt that rings in my ears like hounds after their quarry. Safe danger!
Also from John Sandford: Rules of Prey; Shadow Prey; Eyes of Prey; Silent Prey; Winter Prey; Night Prey; Mind Prey; Sudden Prey; Night Crew & Secret Prey
