Bury the Lead
David Rosenfelt
(Reviewer - Narayan Radhakrishnan)

2004 Warner Books
ISBN: 089296782X

Maverick lawyer Andy Carpenter investigates the murder of a gubernatorial candidate.

Sr. Reviewer Narayan Radhakrishnan writes:

A zany legal thriller with an even more zanier protagonist. This would perhaps best describe the latest Andy Carpenter work by David Rosenfelt.

Having read & reviewed the author's previous two works, Open And Shut & First Degree, it was with great expectation that I opened the pages of Rosenfelt's latest. For the uninitiated Rosenfelt reader, well here is some background on Andy Carpenter:- a maverick, wise-ass, charming lawyer who is better on your side rather than being against you.

That said, he is idealistic, & has a strong notion where justice begins, & the intricacies of legal loopholes come to an end. Carpenter is a lawyer who has made it big. He has money to burn, enough clients, a blossoming love life, & of course Tara, a golden retriever for his company. Life is just smooooth.

Out of the blue a newspaper editor, Vince Sanders, calls. He wants Andy to represent the paper as one of the reporters, Daniel Cummings, has now become an important conduit for a serial killer. Though the sales have boosted, there are major legal problems & the police are constantly in & out of the newspaper offices. Thus the editor wants Andy to be there, in case of “trouble”.

That proves to be an understatement & things go awry when the serial killer strikes again -- the victim is a lady who had announced her candidacy for Governor -- & soon Daniel Cummings is arrested for the murder.

What follows is traditional Rosenfelt action, with the attorney trying hard, against all odds to secure justice for his client.

Bury The Lead is an impressive & top-notch mystery. I enjoy maverick protagonists & book-by-book adventures & Andy Carpenter is becoming my favorite (fictional) lawyer. Together with Sean Drummond (Brian Haig's JAG Lawyer of Private Sector & The Kingmaker fame) & lawyer Lou Mason (Joel Goldman's Motion To Kill & The Last Witness) -- I feel this trio of authors are going to re-define popular legal thriller mystery writing in this Millennium.

Good book -- buy it!
