Jonathan Kellerman
(Associate Reviewer-D. H. BROWN)
1999 Random House NY USA
ISBN: 067945960X
When reports of an inmate's incoherent ramblings begin to make frightening sense as predictions of slayings, Dr. Alex Delaware & Detective Milo Sturgis must penetrate the enigma to prevent anymore killings.
I enjoy Jonathan Kellerman's writings. He leads you step by step through his thrillers like finding bits of treasure clues through a very dark forest.
His writings aren't about Light; they're about that place of darkness that hovers on the edge of our peripheral vision which we really want to ignore but even the momentary glances, right or left, bring a slight shiver.
I really enjoy the relationship between Alex Delaware & Milo Sturgis. I like the freedom that Kellerman gives them each to be their own person. How they're allowed to think & be, only that, just be what they are.
Don't get me wrong! I fully recognise that Kellerman's books are formulaic. Rather than turning me off, as I read, I find some comfort in knowing that at least I have some small knowledge of where I'm going & that I will find resolution when I get there. Without knowing what it is.
Kellerman's one of the few writers that I still want to curl up & read all night.
I don't know why but it seems that a lot of books set in the L.A. basin make us touch a certain “I knew it!” nerve about that city of the Angels. Been to LA & I've heard the growl of the eternal beast at 2 am in the morning. The freeways that roar all night. Maybe it's just that we want to believe that such a place can be lit by hot sunshine during the day & slither on its belly by night.
