The Anatomy Lesson
Robert I. Katz
(Reviewer - Narayan Radhakrishnan)

2004 Willowgate Press
ISBN: 1930008104

A Kurtz & Barent Mystery in which surgeon Kurtz finds a dismembered body in his office.

Sr. Associate Reviewer Narayan Radhakrishnan writes:

Robert I. Katz is back, & so are Richard Kurtz & Lew Barent whom we first met in Surgical Risk.

Stylish surgeon, Richard Kurtz is in a class of his own. He has gotten over the death of Sharon Lee, his erstwhile girlfriend, & has moved on to a very good life: good job, good salary & a beautiful new girlfriend.

Lew Barent, on the other hand, is facing a hell of a time -- with recurrent migraine headaches, & a slew of family problems. This cop has more than he can handle on his plate.

Veteran professor Rod Mahoney is a colleague, friend, guide & philosopher to Dr. Kurtz. Mahoney is also venerated & respected in the medical community, & renowned for his ability to remain calm & unperturbed even in the most extenuating circumstances.

One fine day, Dr. Kurtz gets a dreadful shock when he discovers the dismembered body of his mentor right there in his own office, & the entire Staunton Medical College Community. With the help of Barent, the good doctor launches into an investigation only to find out that there was more to Mahoney than met anybody's eye. What follows is an exciting mystery, with Katz's trademark stylish finish.

As a whodunit, The Anatomy Lessonis a good read. The highlight is, of course, the various medical anecdotes the author puts in -- mild medical puns interspaced with ghoulish medical humor -- all the while keeping medical jargon to a minimum.

However, this is not a stand alone novel. To better appreciate the work, I do recommend reading Surgical Risk in preparation for The Anatomy Lesson. You'll enjoy it so much more.

All in all, The Anatomy Lesson is a first class medical mystery. If you like Robin Cook & Michael Palmer -- you'll like Robert Katz as well!

Recommended for a good evening’s read.
