A young black man tries to prove himself in the white world of Wall Street.
Sr. Associate Reviewer Narayan Radhakrishnan writes:
Junk is a financial thriller (with a ton of puns) in the vein of the sort written by Christopher Reich & E. L. Burton.
Set in the big bucks background of Wall Street dealings, Martin Stallworth, the only black bond-dealer in his company, dreams of making it big. However, it's been difficult to gain the trust of “white men.”, so when the investment bank of Whorman, Skeller & Co., plans to launch a high-yield bond deal for a satellite company, & Stallworth is tapped to lead to charge, he jumps at the chance to prove himself.
But things turn awry when Stallworth & company are inadvertently caught in the midst of financial espionage which leads to murder. Stallworth, the patsy, finds himself accused of the dastardly deeds. What follows is usual suspense/thriller fare -- one man trying to find out the truth, at the same time keeping himself alive to be absolved of crimes he didn't commit.
Michael Goodwin knows his stuff very well (he was a dealer in Wall Street for 12 years), & might, if he keeps writing better & better yarns, be the John Grisham of financial thrillers -- watch this space!
