 Voices
 Anne Garber
(Guest Reviewer - Sandi von Pier)

 2001 Jawbone Publishing
  ISBN: 097029591X

Detectives are at a loss when they find women of questionable character strangled & propped against trash cans in alleys of Orlando, Florida. All bear the same unique signature.

Lieutenant Tom Lindsey, a former New York City homicide detective, leads the case. His last experience with a serial killer left him burnt out & on the edge of vigilantism. A female profiler becomes an unwelcome member of the team & another thorn in Lindsey's side.

The two main suspects are brothers: John, a schizophrenic, is living on the streets without medication. Allen suffers from a sour marriage, an unhealthy affair, & an obsessive concern for his “Corporate” image. Circumstantial evidence piles up but the detectives need something tangible to secure a verdict.

The killings escalates, more victims are found & the city panics. Which brother is it? Are they both guilty? Or is it someone else entirely? Who can be trusted? How well does anyone know their loved ones?

Guest Reviewer Sandi von Pier writes:

Voices is written from different angles -- a serial killer & the lives he touches, the investigators trying to find him & the family & friends of the suspected killer. Anne Garber has created believable characters -- likable & not so likable. John was my favorite: he was charming, peaceful & though he was a suspect I never believed it.

The book begins with the investigators at a crime scene. the author holds nothing back in her descriptions of the scene. Gruesome! The tidbits about the killer's movement are strategically placed so as to keep you guessing. As soon as you think you have it figured out Garber throws another curve at you.

Various forms of abuse are rife throughout Voices. I've seen the effects of mental, as well as physical abuse -- it's sad that someone could loose so much of themselves that they don't know who they are anymore & feel that the situation they are in is all they are worthy of.

Remember a mother's love far-reaching -- pay attention to your children equally. It may be difficult at times if one has a health problem but try to make time for all. Children don't have the ability to rationalize that their sibling gets extra attention because of their condition, they just see it as their mother/parent doesn't love them as much as the other. As a mother of 2 I could relate to this.

This is Garber's first book & I hope it isn't her last. This writer has talent!
