Death of A Bore
M. C. Beaton
(Reviewer - Rebecca Brown)
2005 Mysterious Press
ISBN: 0892967951
A writer ends up dead on Hamish Macbeth's beat.
Once again M. C. Beaton bring us Constable Macbeth in his beloved village in the Scottish Highlands, where a very minor writer called John Heppel has a problem - he's a consummate bore. When he's found murdered in his cottage, there're plenty of suspects. Surely boredom shouldn't be cause for murder, or so thinks the local bobby & sleuth whose investigation of Heppel's soap opera script uncovers much more than melodrama.
Okay folks, get ready to step across The Pond for some verra Scottish goings-on & some delightful who-dun-it hunting among the quirky denizens of Lochdubh.
It's always a bit tricky telling a story about someone who's boring lest one becomes just that: as in “bored to tears”, “bored stiff”, “bored out of my mind”, however, M. C. Beaton, while skating on verra thin ice, pulls off Death of A Bore with many a twist & enough of Hamish Macbeth's character to offer a pleasant evening's read.
