In 354 A.D. Julian is a young scholar in Athens & the last survivor of a bloody, political purge.
Summoned to the court of the Emperor Constantius, Julian fears the worst, only to find himself given the ring of Caesar of Western Europe, where he is tested as a military commander & found to be a genius.
Before the age of 30, Julian will have conquered the world, seized the Roman Empire, & turned back the tide of Christianity. Then he reaches out for the sands of Persia, & that seals his doom.
Sr. Staff Reviewer D. H. BROWN writes:
As I have stated in previous reviews, an historical adventure has to be somewhat extra-ordinary to hold my attention. Michael Curtis Ford & his The Ten Thousand met that criteria without a single fault.
Now comes his second effort, Gods & Legions, which leaves me wondering where he's going to take me next. All the grand words of praise that are in my lexicon are applicable--the detail is remarkable, the depth of character with which he writes, is amazing.
Michael Curtis Ford not only writes about historical times & places, he actually has the knack of making you experience them. Few authors have that innate ability.
Michael Curtis Ford makes you realize that heroes are human & not always godlike. They too have dark sides & their heroism can also make them anti-heroic. I found Gods and Legions like watching a train wreck in the making--you can see where it's going & cannot tear your eyes away.
For a truly gripping read, I recommend without reservation Gods and Legions, & I eagerly await this historical Master's next book.
