Fairy Flight
Tracy L Kane
(Reviewer - Kate Holmes)

2003 Light-Beams Publishing
ISBN: 0970810423

Cousins Kinsey & Sarah share summer days creating fairy houses, boats & the migration of Monarch butterflies.

“I believe butterflies are really fairies in disguise,” whispers Kinsey.

Associate Reviewer Kate Holmes writes:

In the latest offering of her award winning children's Fairy Houses series, Tracy Kane writes & illustrates a picture book that is sure to delight young minds everywhere. This shiny hard cover is adorned with Monet-like drawings in various shades from cheery pastels, to deep night dark, which carry over through each page. The characters of Kinsey & Sarah are well drawn, & quite believable.

Sarah comes from California to visit her cousin Kinsey in British Columbia, where the two girls spend an unforgettable holiday learning about Monarch Butterflies & observing the magic in nature. As the cousins get caught up in the idea of butterflies being “fairies in disguise”, they spend hours collecting twigs, leaves, shells & other natural bits & pieces, using them to build houses, boats, & eventually a village for fairies.

When Sarah tells Kinsey about the life cycle of the Monarch, Kinsey agrees to raise some caterpillars in order to release them when they are grown. After Sarah returns home, she & Kinsey keep up a dialogue through letters in which they discuss the path of the butterflies on their migration south. Paintings & pictures accompany the letters, adding detail to the correspondence between the young cousins.

Fairy Flight is fun while being educational, with hidden messages & crafty ideas. It is one book, which will be on this grandmother's gift list.

The Fairy Houses Series has started a phenomenon in New England, having drawn the attention of the State Conservation Department, as well as the Parks Commission in Maine. A musical adaptation by the Children's Theater of Maine is in the works.

There is also a companion National Public Television video Kristen's Fairy House.

More in The Fairy Houses Series so far are:
Fairy Houses
Fairy Boat.

She is a Canadian wife, mother, grandmother, & avid reader. She has hungered for knowledge her whole life which has led her to haunt her local library & used book stores, looking for “old friends.” She has several bookshelves over which presides a print of Amergin, an ancient wizard from Celtic myth.

A welcome addition to her study, Della, her computer (named for its maker), has become a large part of her world. For some time Kate Holmes reviewed for another ezine, & as a means of giving herself a more varied reading experience, has joined RebeccasReads as a Associate Reviewer.
