Some Things Are Scary
Florence Parry Heide, Illustrator Jules Feiffer (Reviewed by The Editor - Rebecca Brown)
2000 Candlewick Press, Cambridge MA
ISBN: 0763612227
Being on a swing when someone is pushing you too high or getting hugged by someone you don't like. Some things are scary & can be pretty funny, too.
Climbing a tree & not remembering how to get down is scary -- I know from first hand & was glad when Daddy came to the rescue!
Being scolded can be scary!
People laughing at you & you don't know why -- ah, I've known that one!
Discovering your hamster cage is empty -- eeks!
Finding out that your best friend isn't -- oh boy, that one's scary!
All kinds of scariness -- some make you silly with relief & some will linger through your life like that scar on your chin when you fell down that day.
Some Things Are Scary is a good book to raise the subject of scary things, probably not one to read just before bed, however! Perhaps after a particularly trying day at school. Or just before Halloween! Or when something scary happens in your family's life.
Florence Parry Heide is the award-winning author of more than 50 children's books including the classic: The Shrinking of Treehorn. She lives in Kenosha, Wisconsin.
Jules Feiffer is the Pulitzer Prize-winning cartoonist, a renowned playwright & screenwriter & the illustrator of children's books including: The Phantom Tollbooth. He lives in New York City & Martha's Vineyard.
