Am I a Color Too?
Heidi Cole & Nancy Vogl
(Reviewer - Rebecca Brown)

2005 Illumination Arts Pub. Co.
ISBN: 0974019054

A young boy wonders why we focus on skin color rather than who a person is. Through his eyes we explore the common labels of Black & White, & what's in between.

Tyler wonders if we come in, see, smile, sing, dance in all colors of the rainbow, why do we separate people, like shoe boxes, into only two?

Come with this youngster as he wanders through his thoughts about a subject that has driven our species, both in the past & present, to unspeakable acts of inhumanity & inspirational actions of courage: The Little Seamstress, Rosa Parks, comes to mind.

Superbly illustrated by Gerald Purnell this big picture book addresses a touchy subject: how to explain the “race” of children born of “mixed” parentage, when “Other” seems so dismissive.

A fine early introduction to what Shelby Steele referred in his 1991 ground-breaking book: The Content of Our Character, derived from a phrase spoken by Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. in one of his speeches.
