Text by Ramsay Derry

The work of Robert Bateman brings vitality & distinction to the world of wildlife art. His astonishingly detailed & carefully composed paintings of birds & mammals are received with enthusiasm & affection.
To see a Robert Bateman is to glimpse with primal affection a moment in Nature's time when an elk treks across a vast winter landscape of snow, conifers & mountains; or to catch a glimpse of a stream bank where tender green plants glow against the moist earth & a minute bird perches; or a trumpeting bull elephant confronts you in a storm of dust.
Roger Tory Peterson has written an expressive introduction & Ramsay Derry's profile of the artist makes good reading - especially as he's included a history of who Robert Bateman is; where he's lived; several works-in-progress sketches; photos of the artist in action & on location.
When I study a full-page reproduction of a hare hidden in the leaves of autumn, I have a deep sense of wonder that someone has managed to catch a moment that recreates the awe with which I view our wild world.
Because we put out feed, we are blessed with a bounty of wild companions. For this we receive hours of humor, serenity & satisfaction. One of my favorites is a study of a chipmunk, pert & curious. This artist has a fine eye & spectacular ability, shown to good advantage, by his many winter scenes.
Robert Bateman has been places & seen things I'll not in this lifetime & he's brought them back, honed his skills & given us much pleasure.
This exquisite volume was a wedding gift into which we have delved for years. A superb gift that keeps giving each time it is opened.
