Thoughts of a Rural Woman
West End Winter Reprise
by The Editor, Rebecca Brown
Sending good cheer for those hungover by the Saturnalia of the New Year. I've taken poetic license in putting the events out of sequence simply so the lines will rhyme.
West End Winter
On the first day of Winter it rained cats & dogs & brought a rare fast-moving storm of thunder.
On the second day our modems got fried in a fizz of lightning as it rent the clouds asunder.
On the third day the Big River lived up to its name & culverts ranneth over.
On the fourth day the dripping deer & elk leapt for cover.
On the fifth day trees fell across the road & the power went out twice on Christmas Eve day.
And on the sixth day we wrung out our clothes, wiped our glasses & dreamed about next May!
On the seventh day we walked to the bridge & struggled through the downpour to get back.
On the eighth day cold ham sandwiches, chilled sweet oranges & hot bread cooling on a rack.
On the ninth day we hauled wood, emptied ashes & then busted out for town.
On the tenth day it was party time & our soaked neighbors came around.
On the eleventh day the temperature plummeted, the world went silent as snow began to fall...
On the twelfth day bluejays played in our alders & the calm whiteness glowed o'er us all.
Happy New Year!
