Dean Barton
grew up in a large clan of loggers and truckers in the woods of western Oregon. He spent much of his childhood in one of the last communal logging camps, roaming through the diminishing old growth forests of the central Cascade Mountains. He worked in the truck shops, and drove water wagons and log trucks. While he attended three universities, he was something of a vagabond in those days, and couldn't settle down in any one place long enough to finish up; the forest kept calling him back. The woods culture is where he received his real education. Unfortunately, that school is out of business now. Barton farms in western Oregon with his family -- Elena, Max and Lily -- where he grows commercial trees, raises livestock and stewards wildlife habitat.
